Three things I have to write about today: English language, Internet, Uni.
Emma Thompson (actress) has been in the papers all this week for saying that the youth culture speak in a stupid manner. The country is in hysteria over this with mixed views, though the majority of people agree with her.
I partially agree with her.
The thing people seem to be picking on is the use of 'like' 'innit' and text speak.
Now I do agree that people should learn the English language and it's correct rules, because once you've learnt the rules that's when you can change the rules. I think these come as very good basic guidelines.
However, I don't think everyone should speak with received pronunciation (as much as I would love to) or try to copy Estuary English. There is something about me that would love to go back to Shakespearian times (or even before that) where everyone spoke and wrote differently, but I do accept that times are changing and no matter how many times I try to speak standard english, it won't happen because there are different contexts and SE is going out of fashion. It's quite simply true.
Times are changing.
Now, I do say 'like' quite a bit, but that's not because I'm unintelligent. It's because I'm a nervous speaker and it stops me closing up. The word 'like' gives me about 3 extra seconds to calm down and articulate myself.
I heard about some people that were modernising Dickens and Shakespeare into street speak and I think that's disgusting. It's a respect thing really and I don't think changing the classics will help. Maybe I'm just old fashioned.
I'm okay with people speaking in that manner to their friends. We all do it. What I'm not okay with is when people speak like that all the damn time. They do sound stupid and they do need educating correctly so that they too can have a voice for every occasion.

The good old internet has become an integral part of my life. It's done so much for me. Technology in general is nice. It brought me a girlfriend, a place to write, new friends. It really has done alot for everyone and for that, I'm grateful.
But sometimes, I think it's going a bit too far. Sometimes I feel it breaks down social communication and it really pisses me off when people are sat in a cafe or on the bus or anywhere public with other people (eg their friends) and they're playing on their phone or listening to their iPod or texting constantly.
Where's the good old talking? Why don't people write letters anymore?
I really love writing and receiving letters. It's quite romantic. I'd absolutely be amazed if I received a good old fashioned letter that was sealed with wax and written in beautiful calligraphic style writing.

I'm so sexually frustrated.

School is killing me right now. Despite my last post in which I was doing well, I'm kinda not now. Everything's all work and I feel like I can't focus. General Studies has been introduced to us and it's a huge waste of time. I'm worrying about university again. I just wish I could already have my place sorted out.
